The presence of small masses of glandular tissue next to the thyroid gland during surgery to remove a thyroid tumor raises suspicion of metastasis. However, a biopsy analysis reveals that the tissue is actually parathyroid tissue and remnants of the thymus. This finding can be explained by the close proximity and developmental origins of these tissues.
