The Framingham Heart Study, which was started in 1948, aims to identify factors or characteristics that contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). This is achieved by following the development of CVD over a long period of time in a large group of participants who have not yet exhibited overt symptoms of CVD or experienced a heart attack or stroke.
